Designing Brand Symbols: The Principles & Process of Making Logos that Last by | Sagi Haviv

Chermayeff & Geismar & Haviv is a design firm that is known for creating some of the world’s most memorable and iconic brand symbols, including those for NBC, Chase Bank, National Geographic, and the Smithsonian. I am a fan of this firm and its designers, who are able to create unique, unforgettable logos for multinational companies.

  • Start by understanding the client’s needs and goals. Research the client’s business, industry, and target audience to get a sense of what they are looking for in a design.
  • Jump to brainstorming and sketching out a variety of ideas. Don’t worry about perfection at this stage, just focus on coming up with as many options as possible.
  • Consider the purpose and audience of the symbol. What message do you want to convey and who are you trying to reach? This will help guide your design choices.
  • Keep it simple. A symbol that is too complicated or cluttered will be hard to remember and may not be effective
  • Test your symbol on different mediums. Make sure it looks good in black and white, as well as in colour, and try it out on different backgrounds to see how it looks.
  • Get feedback from others. Show your symbol to a few trusted people and gather their thoughts and suggestions.
